Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theatre kicks off a new season with The Puppet Liberation Front, the company’s first mask theater production. Written and directed by Joel Orr, this new mask drama tells the story of a contemporary puppet troupe falling apart at the seams. The puppet leaders extort cash from its own board of directors, assault faculty members of elementary schools where they perform, and betray each other in needlessly diabolical ways. Ultimately unsatisfied with their artistic mission, they decide to use their puppet skills to produce a new form of domestic terrorism: one that promises equal parts showmanship and bloodshed. A lone undercover detective infiltrates the company and finds that the horrors brewing at “Kritter Kontrol Puppets” may be too malignant to be stopped, or even comprehended.

The Puppet Liberation Front is a mask drama where, through masks and costumes, six actors play in excess of fifteen roles. Since Bobbindoctrin is clearly a puppet troupe, there are indeed puppets in the production. “For the first time in Bobbindoctrin history, human actors with masks will share the stage with puppets” artistic director Joel Orr explains. Described by Orr as “bloodier and less redeeming than BPT’s usual fare” The Puppet Liberation Front is Bobbindoctrin’s salute to the Theatre du Grand Guignol, known for classic shock theatre. Specializing in productions designed to horrify and sicken, no Grand Guignol show was considered a success unless a few audience members fainted or upchucked on their shoes.

Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theatre has been producing original puppet works for the Houston community since 1995. Providing experimental adult puppet performances, Bobbindoctrin has a history of introducing audiences to new forms of stagecraft using puppet techniques rarely touched upon by conventional theatre groups. The company incorporates a mix of shadow, rod, hand, string and tabletop puppetry, as well as masks, in any given show. These varied traditions of puppetry are applied to presenting new and original works (not performed or published elsewhere) written explicitly for the puppet stage by local playwrights.
